Matic Bitenc is the CEO of Toshl, maker of personal finance apps for just about every mobile device out there. Based in Slovenia, he faced difficulties dealing with Windows Phone deployment due to absolute lack of Marketplace access to Slovenian developers. As a result, he had to publish his app through Microsoft Slovenia under Microsoft’s account. This means for everything he needs to do with the app, such as updating and checking download stats, he has to contact his liaison at Microsoft, who obviously has his own job to perform.
A light seemed to appear when Toshl was accepted into 500 Startups, but that apparently presented the company with more problems with republishing the app on the Marketplace. He wanted the app to be republished under his company’s account. It took a month and more praying to the app gods to make it happen. After all that jumping through hoops, he discovered that adoption rate of the app on Windows Phone is behind that of BlackBerry, Symbian, and even MeeGo. That’s not the last of his problems.
