There’s a new platform in town and its name is Windows Phone. It’s a different beast from the old and discontinued Windows Mobile and it’s certainly different from the more familiar iOS and Android platforms. Windows Phone has actually been around for more than a year yet there’s still a lot of opportunities to be seized.

To get you started, Microsoft has published a number of guidelines and overviews to help developers get on board the platform and learn the ropes. It also has the much better designed App Hub, which is developer central for those working on Windows Phone and XBox apps and games.

If you plan to venture into Windows Phone territory, go check out the links.

Apple has got you covered. With over half a million apps in the App Store already, what are your chances in finding the one you want? Maybe none of them does exactly what you need to do, so you set yourself up for a journey in app development with an idea in your head and some time to learn the ropes.

This document from Apple lets you understand the steps needed in developing an app for the iOS platform. While each page offers only brief text, it has links to more detailed documents explaining the process. In fact, some of the tips apply not just for creating an iOS app but apps in general because it’s not a series of how to’s or tutorials, it’s an overview of app development process designed to help those new to the game.

If you’re just starting out and needed some help in finding your way around, this is as good place as any to find out what you need to do.

Recently, we released the Android version of Meridian, our platform for building location-based apps.

We didn’t use one of these “Cross Platform!” tools like Titanium. We wrote it, from scratch, in Java, like you do in Android.

We decided it was important to keep the native stuff native, and to respect each platform’s conventions as much as possible. Some conventions are easy to follow, like putting our tabs on the top. Other conventions go deep into the Android Way, like handling Intents, closing old Activities, implementing Search Providers, and being strict about references to help the garbage collector.

Now, our platform leverages HTML5 (buzzword, sorry) in many places for branding and content display, so we got a fair amount of UI for free. But there was much platform code written in Objective-C that needed translation into Java, such as map navigation, directions, and location switching.

So, we rolled up our sleeves, downloaded the Android SDK, and got to work.

First, there was Lodsys, now there’s Kootol. More and more application developers as well as major companies are being threatened by litigations over software patents. The latest one by an Indian company named Kootol claiming patent over status updates and subscription method. Yes, the very method used by Twitter, Facebook, Google, Apple, and all other companies who run a social network site or service, along with those who create applications for them.

This entire situation is becoming unhealthy for software developers.
