Ars Technica got curious and went deep inside the story of WinAMP, once the most popular digital music player, until it was purchased by AOL along with Spinner, another music oriented startup, presumably to build AOL’s music business. In the early years of the AOL acquisition WinAMP thrived but eventually changes within AOL meant WinAMP was no longer a high priority product despite still making money through its shareware scheme. Today, WinAMP is also available on mobile devices but its reign in the desktop has been overtaken by the much larger iTunes.
