Two-factor authentication is a secure login method involving the use of a second passcode to access a service transmitted when a login attempt is detected. The method commonly works by having the service send an SMS to the account holder’s mobile phone number and have the passcode in that SMS entered into the service, thereby ensuring the authenticity of the user. Alternatively, it also works through an authentication app or device tied to the service, which randomly generates the second passcode.

While many companies and services have implemented this security method, it may have come as a surprise that nobody has bothered to check whether there’s a patent on this. As it turns out, Kim Dotcom, who is currently in legal battle with the US government over his now defunct Megaupload storage service, holds the patent for this very method, and has had it for more than a decade.

He has quietly been allowing companies to implement his patended method for free but has now asked Google and Twitter to help fund his legal defense or face a lawsuit. Torrentfreak has Dotcom’s statement regarding the patent and the request.

We are delighted to be one of Twitter’s partners as part of the launch of their new mobile and web cards. Starting today, embedded Path moments that have been syndicated to Twitter are now optimized in expanded Tweets, and the shared content deep links directly to Path.

We are so excited…

You can now reshare and embed other people’s Vine videos from the app with the latest Vine app update. The embed code is only available from the video’s web page though, so it’s a bit more complicated than a simple reshare.

Twitter is seven years old today (happy birthday Twitter!) so Matthew Panzarino decided to pretend that he’s a Twitter newbie and see what it’s like for someone to sign up and check out Twitter for the first time.

Twitter has certainly went through a number of different variations in seven years and each brought different points of views and perspectives into people’s understanding of the service. It looks as though Twitter may have found its more permanent feel over the past year and what we are seeing now and in the near future would be the manifestation of that vision.

Twitter updated the language in its description of its iOS app on the App Store today and it reflects a larger picture of how Twitter sees itself and how it wants people to see the service. Twitter is no longer the simple 140 character status update service as it has moved to deliver rich content and become the window to the world through text, videos, and photos. At the end of the day, Twitter wants to be the global town square instead of that corner cafe in the neighborhood.

Customer service software provider Zendesk announced a security breach that allowed attackers into its system, where they could access data from three customers this week. Wired learned those three clients were Twitter, Pinterest and Tumblr.

The San Francisco-based company announced the breach in a blog post published early Thursday night. Tumblr notified affected users in a tweet at 6:35 p.m. Pacific time; Twitter and Pinterest are expected to do so shortly. Zendesk declined to comment beyond its blog post, titled, appropriately, “We’ve been hacked.” - Mat Honan for Wired

Twitter released a study done by Compete to discover the behaviors of its members. The research discovered that those who primarily use Twitter on mobile devices tend to be younger, more likely to follow brands, and are more receptive to mobile advertising. They are far more active and spend more time on Twitter than those who tweet mainly from the web

Facebook and Google+ may lay claim to the largest and second largest social networks in the world (excluding China) but when it comes to advertising agencies and brands, Twitter is number one, at least when judged by TV ad spots on this year’s Super Bowl. 26 ads feature references to Twitter while the others are barely mentioned at best. Google+ is clearly not in their minds.
